Ling |
Self-taught on the guitar, Singaporean singer and song-writer Ling
sounds like a cross between Norah Jones and Jewel, and has been
singing since she could speak. She has sung in bands as well as
alone, and her repertoire consists of anything from Lifehouse, Matchbox
20, to Tori Amos, Rachael Yamagata and anything that strikes her
fancy.
She
first started composing when she felt that today’s music lack
lyrical sensibilities. Her first piece was inspired by Philip Larkin.
She recorded in her own bedroom with minimal equipment, and then
posted it on YouTube for her friends to listen to. Little did she
expect her song to be featured on the website, gathering more than
1 million hits. Since then, the New Paper as well as Wan Bao had
covered the story of her sudden popularity.
However, the online hype ended when her YouTube account was hacked.
Even so, Ling find the loss of her so-called fame strangely fitting,
for a song about transience. The account is currently back on, with
a new song upload, 21 years. She
continues to work hard for her music, and is currently working on
releasing her original material in an EP late this year.
Ling
uses a Maestro CJ-1 cutaway (discontinued vintage model). You can
find her performing on Saturdays 9.30pm-1am at Novus Al Fresco (National
Museum), Sundays 9.45pm-12.30am at Timbre One (Substation) and Mondays
7pm -9pm at Acid Bar. |
