FAQ

About Maestro

Where are maestro guitars made?

Maestro was first known for handcrafting guitars in Singapore which established the brands core identity of world-class quality instrument manufacturer. This is the thrust that enabled Maestro to continuously expand our global presence and explore improvements of our instruments.

From early 2010, we moved our workshop to Guangzhou, China to increase our capacity to supply global demands. The plant, that is 100% owned and controlled by Maestro Singapore, continues to uphold and improve on key handcrafting production principles, processes, and techniques of Maestro and only employs top luthiers in China.

In order to ensure that Maestro quality standards and processes are achieved, our Singaporean team conduct quality check of every instrument in different production stages. The last of which is conducted here in Singapore where we individually check the overall craftsmanship quality, playability and its tone. These ensure that every Maestro instrument in the market was built to the highest standard and truly uphold our promise of unparalleled price-performance ratio.

Are Maestro Guitars Hand Crafted/Made?

All Maestro Guitars are 100% hand-crafted. We do however; use various machines such as thickness-sanders, jointers, routers etc when preparing raw materials for building. Every process is supervised by a Luthier or qualified technician.

Who are your Luthiers?

Our team of luthiers have worked in top factories in China. The brainchild behind the design of the guitars: Overall guitar design, bracing pattern, tonal responsiveness is the founder of Maestro Guitars: Hozen

How good is Maestro compare to established guitar brands?

In terms of built-quality and choice and quality of tonewoods, we are definitely on par with more established guitar brands. Our instruments have a different tonal response that favours more mids than airy trebles. So depending on your preference, you pick the one that suits you best. Mostly important, you don’t have to pay a bomb to play a Maestro.

Is Maestro international?

Yes. With distributors in Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore, France and Canada, we have definitely set our sights on the international market. We hope to share our Singapore quality and Maestro experience with the rest of the world. If you are interested to represent us in your domestic market, do not hesitate to contact us right away.

Where do you get your wood from?

Blackwood from Australia; Spruce/Cedar from Canada/Europe; Rosewood from India and Java; Cocobolo from Mexico/Vietnam; Macassar Ebony from Indonesia; Ebony, Grandillo, Ovangkol, Burbinga from Africa. Basically we have suppliers from all 5 continents of the world.

Why doesn’t Maestro make coloured guitars? (black, blue, red, rainbow swirls, etc.)

Manufacturers choose to colour the guitar to cover up flaws during manufacturing. We pride ourselves in using quality materials; hence the majority of our instruments are constructed with natural finishing.

What bracing do you use?

We use a modified forward X bracing for all our acoustic guitars. Complexity of the bracing differs from all the 3 series: Standard, Elite and Custom. Tap tuning is implemented in the custom series.

As for our classical guitars, we adopt the 7-strut fan bracing for all our concert series. 5-strut fan bracing is used for our estudiante series.

For the masterclass series, we have variants of Torres-style fan bracing to Smallman-style lattice bracing depending on the tone we want to achieve.

What is the purpose of the carbon fiber rods in the neck?

The carbon graphite has a higher stiffness to weight ratio than steel and is extremely light, adding very little weight to the overall instrument. This makes for an extremely true and stable neck, which is also very energy efficient, virtually eliminating “dead spots”.

What is the neck made of? How many piece neck?

Our necks on the solid-tops and full-solids are made of Philippine Mahogany or also known as Red Lauan and Nato on our Laminated guitars. Our necks are constructed 3-piece for both stability and strength that is better than the traditional 1-piece neck construction.

What is the nut width?

The available nut widths are 43mm (Steel-strings), 48mm (Fusion Classicals), 52mm (Classicals).

What is the scale length?

Our Scale length is standard at 650mm for all our instruments unless otherwise stated.

What are the materials for the nut and saddle?

All Maestro guitars and ukuleles come standard with bone nuts and saddles. Bone has been the traditional material of choice for guitars and ukuleles for the past 50 years.

Why not TUSQ or FMI for nut and saddle?

TUSQ and FMI are available as options. If you will like to change your nut/saddle, we will be happy to offer you a quotation. Please enquire from our guitar consultants.

We will recommend TUSQ for it’s treble clarity and there will be significant improvement especially when you have a B-band UST pickup system installed.

FMI will tend to provide a better mid-response and a slightly fuller tone compared to Bone however they can be hard to work with as they are more brittle.

What strings do you use?

We recommend Made in USA Daddario EXP16 (0.12) for our acoustic guitars and Daddario EXP46 for our classical guitars. Our ukuleles are equipped with premium Made in Italy Aquila strings for 20series and above. 10series Ukuleles are equipped with OEM “nlygut” strings.

How come there are guitars of the same model, but look different? (hardware, finish, etc)

From time to time, we will release limited editions of a particular model; the limited edition will be available in various wood combinations, finishing as well as hardware.

As for hardware like machine heads and strap pins, they may differ from batches to batches due to our commitment in providing quality components for our instruments.

Are specifications important when it comes to choosing guitars?

Specifications are important as it would indicate the material and design of the instrument which will give an idea of how the instrument will sound like. However paper specifications do not equal to the real performance of the product, we suggest customers not to blindly choose their instruments solely on specifications but take time to know the brand and the builder better as well as to test-drive the instrument before deciding.

Why does my Solid top(Other OEM brands) sounds not as good as Maestro Guitars?

Not all guitars are created equal. A guitar being a solid-top doesn’t mean it will automatically sound good. Workmanship and knowledge in building are all critical in making the guitar sound good. Maestro Guitar’s laminated tops can regularly rival many competitors’ solid tops. Do not choose a guitar blindly based on specs. It’s important to consider how the guitar sounds and feels.

Laminate vs Solid top vs Full Solid what am i paying for?

You are paying for the cost of raw material as well as the workmanship involved. Solid wood naturally costs more than laminate wood. We also spend more time with better materials to refine the tone further. Laminate guitars have less attention to detail as well as cheaper hardware and raw material.

Will my Maestro survive overseas under different weather conditions?

Yes if recommended care procedures are followed properly from the Maestro Care and Feeding guide. Maestro guitars are constructed in humidity controlled environment of 50% RH. Maestro Guitars recommend our customers to keep the humidity where they keep their instruments between 40% to 65% RH.

Would installing a pickup affect the tone/sound of the guitar?

Not that we can hear it. However improper installation may cause irreversible structural damage to your instrument.

Will an upgrade of bridge pins affect our overall sound and what the best material?

Usually the effect is subtle and the bridge pin material boils down to density (lasts longer) and looks. As for tone, opinions are largely divided. Maestro uses ABS pins for our standard and elite series and Ebony pins for our custom series.

Warranty Issues

What does the warranty cover?

Warranty covers all manufacturing defects in our instruments. For details of exclusion, please refer to our warranty terms and conditions in our care and feeding guide as well as before you register for warranty.

I heard that if I modify my guitar, my warranty may be void. How do I know which modifications will void the warranty?

Any modification that is not done by authorized Maestro personnel will void your warranty.

I would like to have a strap button installed on my guitar. Will this void the warranty?

It will void the warranty on the neck if the strap button is not installed in the correct location of the neck or if the neck is damaged while the strap button is installed by an unauthorized person. We highly recommend the strap button be installed by an authorized Maestro dealer.

I just bought my guitar a couple months ago and the bridge seems to be lifting. Is this covered under the warranty?

Yes this is covered under warranty unless otherwise stated at the point of sales. Please send in your instrument to the nearest Maestro service centre.

Care and Feeding Issues

How does cutaway and pickup installation affects guitar sound?

Cutaway usually means a leaner bass response (good or bad depends). Pickup installation typically doesn’t affect the sound audibly.

When is the best time to change my strings?

When the strings have oxidised it’s best to change them. Strings will not intonate properly if they are rusted. However we can’t dictate when someone changes strings. Jazz players like old strings while the rest usually will change every 3-6 weeks. For recording artistes, sometimes every 2-3 days!

If I change string gauges will this affect the neck?

Most guitar necks would require a small truss rod adjustment when switching string gauges.

Why is my guitar’s top bloated?

The guitar top will bloat if the humidity is too high. Even on the highest end guitars, you will encounter bad cases of warpage and bloating if you don’t watch the humidity. However a bridge doctor can be installed to counter this problem. Enquire from our consultants.

How do I know it’s time to change strings if the sound doesn’t change?

Typically it’s time to change when the plain steel strings (high E and B) show signs of excessive wear. String life also differs from player to player. Take a look at any of our recommended strings for a pack that lasts longer.

How can I control or prevent movement of the neck?

The main factor that affects neck movement is humidity. Generally, increased humidity causes necks to back-bow and low humidity causes necks to front bow. These movements can usually be corrected with truss rod adjustments. Of course wood being an organic substance will need be assessed individually at times.

I go through strings faster than normal, and I think it’s because I have more acid in my fingers than other players. What can I do about that?

You might have a fairly common condition called “Hyperhidrosis”, in which one’s fingers have a higher-than-normal acid content. If you are serious about dealing with this condition – which can be bothersome for a guitarist – you should contact a dermatologist.

Or, simply wash your hands before you play and when you have finished playing, wipe down the strings thoroughly going through each individual string.

Retail Issues

Can I buy a guitar from you and you do a full setup for me?

All our guitars come standard with Maestro setup and we pride ourselves for having a lower than industry-standard action. We will be happy to do minor tweaks for you to make the action more comfortable depending on your playing style but we will suggest you to pay for a customized setup if you want more.
